Summer hair care

Summer equals sun, sand and surf. And also dried-out, fried, lanky locks. Award-winning hair stylist Brad Ngata tells us how to get the best hair this summer.

What can I do at home to keep my hair looking beautiful?
Summer hair starts with the best condition, it’s really important to start with quality home hair care so invest in a great shampoo, conditioner and treatment. A weekly treatment at home is a must, try wrapping your wet hair in plastic wrap and sit in the sun – this opens the cuticle and the heat helps the hair adsorb the treatment.

How often should I get my hair cut in summer?
I suggest to all my clients to have a great cut at the beginning of the season and maintain with regular trims throughout the season. This strengthens the ends and helps eliminate any splitting that may occur during the warmer months..Swimming and external elements can strip the hair of natural oils and fade your colour.

What are the hottest looks this summer?
What’s big this summer, is the dropped curl. To do at home invest in a medium sized tong. Wash and condition hair then use a sea salt spray and dry off. Start at the back and section. Wrap the hair around the tong leaving about 5cm from the scalp so it’s slightly angled. Continue until all of the back is complete. On the top sections drop the curl even lower, continue to do the same to the sides. The idea is to create volume not height. When finished use a small amount of serum and rake it through your hair using your fingers, separating the tight ringlet curls. Finish with a hairspray.

What about a quick and easy up ‘do?
Follow the same steps as the tonging, then tip your head upside-down and twist hair into a topknot

I’m growing out a winter fringe – what can I do?
A three-strand plaid behind the ear and worn as a headband is an easy solution. The look you’re trying to achieve is releaxed beach waves with added dimension (with the braid). Think Mary-Kate Olsen or Rachael Zoe texture.
